Rajkot is one of the fastest developing city located in the center of Saurashtra region of Gujarat State situated on western part of India. The city has geographical area of 104.86 sq.kms. and has a population of one million plus(Census, 2001).
Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) is a local government committed to provide basic infrastructure facilities including entertainment facilities to the people of the city. RMC is very well known for the managing the city by using private sector participation as well as introduction of innovative mechanism in management to serve people efficiently. City has prepared different plans for improving services and to nullify gap between services and demands.
Mnistry of Home Affairs, Government of India is the nodal agency at national level for the execution of the programme supported by UNDP. There is a programme management board (PMB) headed by the secretary MHA to provide overall guidance to the programme.
In Gujarat the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) is the nodal agency at State level which is executing the programme with the support of UNDP, A state Steering Committee (SSC) headedby the principal Secretary and CEO, GSDMA and comprising secretary level officials, and representatives from other governmental and non-governmental organizations has been set up for monitoring the programme. The UNDP Supporting the implementation at Various levels of the administrative structure through National UN volunteers and the subject experts. Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Programme (UEVRP)is a national initiative to reduce vulnerabilities of communities. The programme aims to contribute to the social and economic development goals of the National and State Governments, enable them to minimise losses to development gains and reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters.
